Is anyone READING anything?

Besides for following my environmental listservs, the New York Times, Alternet (http://www.alternet.org/), Truthout (http://www.truthout.org/), Common Dreams (http://www.commondreams.org/), (and all the other VU/VUJ news), my goal is to read some fiction (finish the Harry Potter series and some good old fashioned escapism--mostly mystery/detective, ) and some history (related to slavery for the fall Cultural Diversity class), I'm always interested in what people are reading.... let's talk!!

105 comments:

  1. I have finished the Twilight series at the insistance of my 12 year old...I actually enjoyed them. The movie...not so much. Books are so much better, I never have liked a movie as well as a book...the depth just is not there. My husband of course argues...he WILL NOT read a book...he says, I will watch it on DVD. Drives me crazy. Sooo NOT the same. Maybe like your husband...20 years from now he will read a book on his own. Would be great to have an intelligent conversation with him..that does not involve the Colts! lol...ahhh but I love him anyway ;)

  2. Actually, to kill a lil time in Evansville before we took Mom to the doctor, we went to Barnes and Noble. Skip bought some poker books and we picked up a book called Global Warming (The Scientific Evidence). Haven't read it yet, so more later about that. Then we picked up a Chinese fortune telling book, just because it looked interesting, and then Skip found a book call The Great Rivers of the World.
So we have a good variety.

Lisa2...I will be reading the Twilight books soon too, one of my many reading ventures this summer.

And Jan....I love mystery murder book, my shelves are filled with them. You're makin me wish I had taken that Cultural Diversity class for fall:(
But I'm still there for two more years. I'll catch it in fall of 2010. Ya know, we could have an online book club for summer...just an idea? I've always wanted to be in a book club.

  3. Me too Mary! I would be in a book club. lol I love reading..murder,mystery and mayhem. I love Stephen King and Dean Koontz but I have read all of them. Also Sue Crafton...Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts. Not much into the romance novels..not my cup of tea. I love fiction and nonfiction. I have just recently wanted to start reading some history...I slept through that class in school and now I am interested in what all I missed. I heard Mary say one day..Knowledge is Power...and she is so right...Now that I am getting older...I want to know more and more. I can't seem to learn enough. Anyone know any great history books...shoot me some names! I just read a book about where writing and our language originated and how it evolved...i know it sounds boring..but it had PICTURES!! lol it was interesting to see how much it has changed...from writing on papyrus and parchment(which is animal hide..I did not know that)to our modern computers. Thought it would be a snooze..but I was out of reading material...and I enjoyed it...book nerd, I know.

  4. My daughter had to do a book report a few years ago on a county in Indiana...She had to do DeKalb county..which is way up in northern Indiana. We decided we needed a break and to give her a hands on education...we booked a hotel in Auburn,Indiana..the county seat of Dekalb County. I googled some places of interest and found a historic house in Auburn..that was a stop in the underground railroad owned by John Martin SMith..a lawyer and historian. His house is pictured in a book called 99 Historic Homes of Indiana. I googled his name...and called him and asked if there was anyway we could bring Alyssa by just to take a picture of her in front of his house for her report. He was so awesome he said I can do better...I'll meet you and bring her in. He showed us not only the beautiful house...but all the wonders inside...he had antiques and history everywhere. He took us to the basement where he showed my daughter the door to the cistern where the slaves would hide. He showed her books and pictures. That was just one of our many stops in Dekalb County...but he was such a kind man to do that for us. The crazy part was...my husband thought I was crazy for calling up this guy and driving almost 6 hours for Alyssa's book report...but when we knocked on this guy's door...He looked almost exactly like my husbands Dad, who had passed away. They were even born the same year. He loved history...just as my father in law did. The resemblence brought us to an abrupt stop...I couldn't even talk for a moment, my eyes had filled with tears. Strange how life leads us to places and people.....

Just a nice story I wanted to share:)

And of course she ACED that book report...lol

  5. What an amazing mom you are, Lisa. Creative idea! Bold, yes. And yet, had you not asked/risked/taken the chance... nothing ventured, nothing gained. Holy cow, what if other parents would take such an insterest in their kids education!!!! The world would be a different place indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thank you very much Jan. A better place indeed.
His wife was a elementary teacher. She was shocked when I called...and amazed and gave me her husbands cell#. Very very kind people...only meeting them once..I will always remember them. We all enjoyed it and learned alot.

    ReplyDelete
  7. WOW!!! That is truly incredible! It was wonderful for you to make that trip and gracious of that couple to let you come in and tour their home. What a great story, I'm glad you shared it;) And I agree with Jan, more parents should go the extra mile for their kid's education.

Stephen King is one my favs too. I have a ton of Dean Koontz and Stephen King on my shelf waiting to be read. I also like James Patterson, he writes along the same lines....and I'm like you, don't care for romance.

  8. Book Club.. Great Idea... It can be posted to this thread... I want to be in the book club.

Do I have to read anything??

I did get 3 poker books today, like Mary said.
It is to help me with my summer job, playing poker once a week.

    ReplyDelete
  9. (laughin at Skip..do I have to read)
Count on Skip to make ya laugh after a rough day. Thank you.

Mary I love Patterson too. That's my problem...I have like a select few favorites...I read every single book they have written...then...I don't know where to go. Do you know any similar authors...as you can tell from my jibberjabbering..I really need to go to the library and get myself something to do!

  10. IDEA FOR BOOK CLUB!!!

    1. Agree on a book to read together (it should be something fast to read, easy to obtain, and yet substantial enough to discuss--I've lots of ideas--surprise!?!?).

    2. Sometimes in a book club there are questions available online to start the discussion.

    3. We can make a deadline to start the discussion--long enough out so that people can get the book and read it.

Suggestion for first book: The Giver by Lois Lowry. I know that Dean Johnson's wife is reading this for her book club. The book is available in VUJ and other libraries as it won a Newberry Prize for young adult fiction. And yes, I have found book club questions that we can discuss when everyone has read the book.

Of course, I'm open to other book choices as well. Anyone want to do this?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm in....actually going to library shortly...I'll see if it's in.Thanks Jan!I'll read it either way...I need ideas for reading material...book club or not! lol

    ReplyDelete
  12. YAY....A BOOK CLUB!
I've wanted to do this my WHOLE life!
Let's do the Giver! I will go get it today, let's make a deadline. How far out should it be? Get your book Jan! So what are we thinkin 2 weeks, a month??

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would like to nominate Jan as the President of the Newly formed Book Club. and Mary, Lisa2 and Me as Officers. Now we need to recuit more members......

All in favor of Jan being our President signify your vote by saying YAY... or NAY......or for yes use the Book Club moto of WOO HOO!!!!

    WOO HOO...!!!!!! Jan for Pres....

p.s. VERY IMPORTANT...After the vote for Pres. we need to come up with a name. This is Sooooooooooooooooo COOL.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lisa, Skip's sister sent me some books and some of them were Greg Iles books. She likes Dean Koontz too and these book are similar. Some other authors I spotted on my shelf are Micheal Connelly, Iris Johanson, Kyle Mills and Frank De Felitta. De Felitta has a seried called the Audrey Rose series....they were pretty good books. I also like anything V.C. Andrews writes...she is the one who wrote the book Flowers in the Attic.
Now I know who to pass all my spook books on to when I finish reading them;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. WOO HOO...I second that motion! Jan for president.....a name...a name...do book club's have a name?
Maybe instead of Oprah's book club, maybe it should be Jan's book club or the sandbox book club. What does everyone think....MAN, I've not been this excited since I opened my first lemonade stand....lol.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You all are AMAZING!!!

Ok, The Giver it is. As for the deadline to read and then begin the discussion... let's see if anyone else is interested?

Perhaps I should set up another blog for the book club? The Sandbox Book Club!. Even though it sounds playful, we can have some thought provoking discussion as we have seen already in the "Life After Interpersonal" where some very personal and important revelations/self-disclosures have come forward....

And there is no need for officers b/c the book choices and responsibilities will rotate through the membership. So let's put out an invite for others who we know are readers/interested? Skip, you are good at getting people interested...? It doesn't have to just be from our little I.C. group. Might Aubrey be interested, Mary? Anyone else you can think of?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Awesome...The Giver is out at Jasper...due back today...So I'm next in line...of course they will call now that I am home!

Thanks for the authors Mary....I love VC andrews too...I read FLowers in the Attic 4 times when I was about 13. Love it!

I think 2 weeks too. If everyone can get the book right away. If not...I go with the flow..whatever works.

I'm going to ask Margaret...but I can't say if she will or not.

    Yayyyyyyyy!
    Woohoooooo!
    lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. Skip and Mary, I am so sorry to hear this news. You guys and your mom will be in our prayers, along with my mom. I just posted on the other entry before checking this one, we found out some bad news from my mom....so when I remember my mom, I will remember yours too, and Debbie's.

My mom's outlook the last time, and this time too, is that she doesn't have the time to mess with cancer.
She got a good report after this last surgery, only to find out the doctor was wrong, so discouragement has set in.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Skip and Mary, I just don't know what to say! So much bad news for our mothers. You know you can count on me if you need ANYTHING. I will keep you all and Lisa Sanders in my prayers. We are in this together. Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Old West series is great. I lost my entire complete collection in the divorce....along with ALL the Clint Eastwood movies...Dirty Dog!

By the way, the movie Tombstone with Sam Elliot and...help me Lisa2...all I can think of is the computer who wore tennis shoes, Goldie Hawn's boyfriend,.....
Anyway, the movie Tombstone goes right along with the story in the Old West book.

  27. Jan.....
can you change a "thread title" if so this one needs to read....The SANDBOX Book Club(if we all like it). It seems fitting.

I feel "disconfirmed"(IC lesson) from not being able to be an Officer in a Book Club, It was a life long dream of mine. :) He he he.

Just Kidding the.. whole Officer comment was a joke, but I was serious about you being President.

I do think However if we are a "Club" we need to at least have a "Meeting" once in awhile, and I recommend The Sozo, for coffee and a sweet roll.

    Sounds like fun anyway....

    ReplyDelete

$24.95 a month to Time Life Books, I know, I wrote the checks! Then, when we had the complete set, they said we might be interested in the Clint Eastwood Collection. Of Course! So off went the monthly checks, or should I say every three weeks. I would have had all the movies up to 1994...
I hope he has enjoyed them....and he doesn't even read. Grrrr.....

  74. Book Club Members: We are starting to read The Giver tomorrow, friday. It is a short read, should not take long.

Note: I just found out that The Giver is the beginning of a Trilogy. Then comes Gathering Blue and the third and final book in the series is Messenger.

This may mean we need to read ALL 3 and comment on each as we go.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You are the detail guy....I never picked up on that one. I can't wait to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowery. It is about a little girl whose family helps to smuggle Jews out of Denmark. It is also a Newbery Medal Winner.

Jan I think I'm really gonna like this author!! Did I tell you guys how excited I am that, I'M IN A BOOK CLUB!!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. lol Mary! Me too!...I now have The Giver...will start reading tonight...prolly be done tomorrow. And yes I agree with Skip..if it is a series...we have to read them all...I hate to leave things unfinished!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I talked to a boy the other night at church. Every time I see him he is reading, I think he is 11 or 12. Anyway, I asked him if he had ever read The Giver and told him I was in a book club and we were going to read that book. He got a look on his face like, "YOU are in a book club....Your too old!" I had to laugh! He said it is a very good book.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I am all for reading all of them...but I just found out I am flooded in and Jimmy is going to be flooded out if he doesn't get home soon!

It may be a few days before I can get to the library, or anywhere for that matter. I love it when I get stuck up here on the hill, I just wish I had gotten into town to get the book...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Don't worry, Lisa. We will wait for you. I won't post the questions until we have everyone on board who wants to be. Let's give at least two weeks. Anyone else who wants to be a part is welcome. Invite them... this includes Mary's mother!

Yes, Skip, I'll start a new thread for the bookclub, although you should also be able to do this by "signing in" at the blog site--see upper right corner... also, you can be a follower by adjusting your settings.

Since you want to be an officer, we'll have you be the First VP of Catering, since food always seems to be on your agenda! Should this include libation as well as food? Hmmm, guess I already know the answer to that, Skip. ;-)

I'm not sure we will read the entire trilogy, unless that is what everyone wants. Let's just start with The Giver and see where that goes? So the questions will be posted on May 28. Will that give everyone enough time?

    ReplyDelete
  80. never been in book club so I am just following whatever u say! lol Gives me time..starting book tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey Jan, guess who is joining the book club? Jesse Hubert...he has already read it...just finished it and is now reading Tuck Everlasting. He definately wants to get in on the book club though.....it's growing guys....YAY! Now I have to get ahold of Aubs and see if she wants to be in it.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well, I don't know about me bringing any libation, BUT plenty of Alcohol is a must!!!

We are starting the Giver this weekend. Along with many house and deck projects, it will be a fullfilling busy weekend, which is what we ALL need.

Mary is at the beauty parlor now, Me and Mom have been sitting out on the deck in the porch swing, watching the birds, geese, lake, trees, just talking. Enjoying the quiet and sounds of nature.

Going to the hardware when Mary gets back to get supplies.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Skip, you are such a nice guy! Mary and Mom are blessed women to have you around...

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  90. Well we started..... reading the giver..
and I am reading A Summer to Die by Lois Lowery.

Spent the day, on home projects, put up some shelving, and some dividers for Bethanys room,
    more to do on tuesday.

Monday is Evansville.... Mom has Ultra- sound at 10 am and we have a 3 pm appointment too. then back home.

time to eat.... it is Chinese tonight. Yummy.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I haven't read 2nd chance, I really need to get into all my books and see what I have..lol. I usually don't like romance novels, but James Patterson has a book called Sunday's at Tiffany's that i thought sounded interesting. The cover says "What if your imaginary friend from childhood was your one true love?" I don't know, just caught my eye.
I'm sure I will be doing a lot of reading this summer. Let me know how ya like the one your reading...James Patterson...I would read almost anything he wrote.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think all 8 of the Murder Club books will be great...so far the first 2 are...the 8th just came out....

Sunday at Tiffany's....that does sound interesting....I had an imaginary friend when I was 4..lol I names her Marcyanna...no idea how I came up with that name..Mom said I cried one day when I said Dad sat on her! .... I had issues. lol

    ReplyDelete
  93. Marcyanna....interesting. All of my stuffed animals were my imaginary class, my brothers made fun of me for talking to them, so because of the teasing...I had issues too..lol

I have not started reading anything but The Giver. I will have plenty of time soon, I'm sure.

  94. I picked up The Giver today at the library.

Took Lucas with me and got him a stack of books and some good educational DVD's for rainy days, that should take care of the rain for a while! LOL! Get a plan and the rain will stop!

It was his first trip to the library and he was in awe...looks like I have me a new library buddy!

  95. Awww....Grammy is introducing Lucas to the wonderous world of words....good for you! (and him) I used to take my kids to the library for their summer program...now they love to read. My oldest love Stephanie Meyer....she just finished The Host.
