Earth 2100

I was just wondering of anyone had the chance to watch the 2-hour special on ABC called Earth 2100- The Reality?

Jan? Did you get to watch it. I thought it was very good. My husband and daughter watched it with me. There were points I was in tears thinking of IF that is how it happens...that is the world my daughter and grandkids will grow up in. It timelined starting in 2009 through 2100, how this could be our last century of civilization.

The thing that really stuck in my head was a particular analogy they used. They said...put a frog in a pan of cold water. Turn the heat on low. Because the change in temperature is so slow....the frog doesn't even realize the moment it is cooked.....

Only... the frog is us. People are going to wait until the last minute...until a disaster of mass porportion happens to act. Then it will be to late.

They even played a game...where important business men pretended disaster was here...and talked about how they would fix it. Even then...they WOULD not agree to give up their technology. Greed will get us in the end.

They talked about the Mayan civilization, the great Roman Empire and Easter Island. How they were strong and powerful...thought they were untouchable...much like the United States. They grew.....and grew...and became overpopulated and used up all their resources...cutting down the very last tree on Easter Island and turning to cannalabism (on Easter Island). These strong..very powerful empires collasped.

They talked about how when the water is gone from places like Africa, who already have extreme droughts, the people there will have no choice but to migrate to survive. They showed millions of people at the border of the US...and our soldiers shooting them down with machine guns. The US, being the main culprits in this problem, can not possibly allow millions and millions of people here that would use up OUR resources. Even though we are responsible for the loss of their homes.

If the climate change continues along the path the Harvard researchers expect...and the way the movie showed...they said by 2030, two-thirds of the worlds population will be water deficient. Not even a drought...but a dessert. And possibly one-third of the animal species could be facing extinction.

There has been 5 previous mass extinctions...all caused by natural disasters. You can read about them all over the net...or here http://www.actionbioscience.org/newfrontiers/eldredge2.html
But we are now in the 6th extinction..and the first one not caused by nature. One species is responsible for this....and it isn't the frog.

Pretty scary stuff...This movie really got me. I hope if any of you missed it...there is a way to watch it online. I don't know. I think this would be a great movie for Earth awareness and it is about time they put it on ABC. It is sad to think...alot if not all of this is true. I don't see powerful people doing anything until it is to late. So sad.... sorry to vent on here...but it was a powerful and scary reality...and it needs to be shown over and over until people get it.

  2. Ok..so Lisa...I missed the show...but I went on Net Flix to see if I could find it on there with no luck. It does sound interesting and we never saw it advertised. I'm gonna keep checking back to see if NF gets it in. I'll keep and eye out.
